About Dr Perera
Dr Channa Perera is an adult Endocrinologist and covers all aspects of adult endocrinology with his special interests being Diabetes and Thyroid disorders.
Dr Perera has over 17 years of experience in the field of endocrinology and currently a Senior Staff Specialist in Endocrinology with SSWLHN, NSW health.
For over 15 years he has been providing public and private endocrine services in the Sydney metropolitan area as well as in the regional NSW.
He has made a strong commitment to teaching; previously being a Conjoint Lecturer with University of Sydney and currently a Conjoint Senior Lecturer with faculty of medicine at University of Western Sydney.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
BSc (Med), MBBS (Hons)
Dr Perera is graduate of University of New South Wales, Sydney, where he attained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours (1994). He completed his basic physician training at Westmead Hospital.
FRACP
Dr Perera did his Advanced training in Endocrinology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Andrology unit at Concord hospital. RPA is a highly sought after institution for Advanced training in endocrinology as it offers exposure and training in all areas of adult endocrinology.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
Dr Perera is a clinician who covers the full breadth of endocrinology not only in the field of practice but also in terms of providing services to a wider community.
Dr Perera is in private practice in Sydney metropolitan area in the locations of Bella Vista and Mt Druitt with clinical privileges as a consultant endocrinologist at Norwest Private and Macquarie University Private Hospitals. In regional NSW he provides a consultancy service in Lithgow. His regional clinics have been backed by a busy telehealth service, which is used by many clinicians in the central west region of NSW.
His clinical commitments are divided between private consulting and working for NSW health at a capacity of a Senior Consultant attached to Sydney South West Local Health Network.
Senior Staff Specialist Physician– NSW Health
Dr Perera has worked as a senior consultant Physician with NSW health for over 16 years. His current affiliation is with SSWLHN. Previously he was affiliated with GWAHS where he also served as the stream leader for Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Senior Lecture – University of Western Sydney.
As a Conjoint Senior Lecturer of the university, Dr Perera is actively involved in teaching Medical students, JMO and Endocrine registrar training.
Macarthur Thyroid Health Clinic
Dr Perera founded the university Thyroid clinic in 2010 for Western Sydney University at Campbelltown Hospital which is the principle teaching hospital for WSU. He continues to work as the clinician in charge of this clinic which covers all aspects of Thyroid health and plays an important role in teaching of medical student and Advanced trainee registrars in Endocrine training.
Telemedicine Clinics in Endocrinology
In 2011 with the introduction of telehealth by medicare, Dr Perera initiated a telehealth service through Central West Endocrinology. This service has now grown to a weekly clinic with a high demand; rural patients and GP’s have benefited greatly from these clinics which are designed to provide care for the most deserving patients with little waiting time and prompt treatment.
Fortnightly clinics at Lithgow Specialist Medical Centre
When the MSOAP program was first launched by the government in 2003, Dr Perera was approached by the area GP’s and the area health service to provide a much needed endocrine service. He undertook this challenge by providing fortnightly endocrine clinics in Lithgow also servicing the adjoining areas such as Bathurst and Mudgee. It has now been 14 years since he started this service.
